Lauren is a rock hound who totally geeks out about minerals, crystals, and rocks, so it was a fortunate happenstance that the Carnegie Natural History Museum had a special “Gem and Minerals” exhibit while we were there last week.
We wandered through three rooms of impressive, shiny, and often colorful specimens from all over the world in sparkling glass cases and it was all good until we got to the last room in the exhibit: Precious jewelry.
Lauren was appalled.
Lauren: What? What is this? They take these gems and make them into that?
Me: Yeah, that’s sort of the point. That’s why they are called precious stones and gems.
Lauren: I am deeply offended that they took good rocks and made then into stupid jewelry.
